And while it may surprise you to learn that new research shows that the aging process begins much earlier than most of us expect, its effects are controllable—at least to some extent—by our lifestyles and diets. 

New research has also shown that pomegranates can jumpstart the mitochondria “clean-up” process, leading to powerful and measurable cell recycling.

Science & Demystifying the Aging Process

New research from Dunedin, New Zealand, tracked 954 individuals (the Dunedin Study birth cohort) tracking several biomarkers from early adulthood (26 years) through to their third and fourth decades of life (38 years).

What the researchers found was telling. Young people of the same age showed a great deal of variance in their biological aging (which the researchers defined as the steady biological decline of multiple organ systems in the individual).

Of particular interest to the research effort was the finding that even before reaching mid-life, some individuals demonstrated advanced aging compared to their peers. Individuals whose bodies were aging more rapidly than their peers looked older showed brain aging and cognitive decline and were less physically able.

The study drilled down into a highly specific analysis of the pace at which individuals age, using the variables of Biological Age and Pace of Aging to draw conclusions about the aging process in younger people.

The researchers concluded that test subjects with an older Biological Age and faster Pace of Aging scored much lower on tests that sought to measure their strength, motor coordination, and balance. These test subjects also reported more physical limitations.

Furthermore, the impact of an older Biological Age and faster Pace of Aging affected the test subjects’ IQ tests—at just 38 years, they scored considerably lower than the norm.

These subjects also demonstrated indicators of an elevated risk for stroke and an elevated risk for dementia. This group also reported generally feeling worse in their overall health assessment.

At the same time, study evaluators were also able to detect differences in the aging of the faces of the individuals from photographs of them.

It is telling that the group that looked older and demonstrated physical and cognitive decline before their peers generally felt unhealthier.

With much being made of the connection of our lifestyle choices to our health and our longevity, this study helped to anchor at least one salient point for this writer: Aging starts early, and our choices around diet, exercise, and lifestyle may have an impact on how fast we age.

Free Radicals Cause Havoc in Our Lives

One thing to be grateful for in this bleak bit of aging news from the world of science is that we know some of the causes of premature aging, and science has already figured free radicals as one of “the usual suspects” in this process.

As you probably know, free radicals are oxygen-containing molecules with an uneven number of electrons.

This unevenness makes them particularly volatile in the human body. These molecules can react with many other, more stable compounds, potentially causing chemical chain reactions of oxidation and, you guessed it, aging us.

Unfortunately, free radicals give no quarter and have even been known to attack our DNA; their instability and volatility do not discriminate.

Urolithin A is produced in the intestines and is then further absorbed by our tissues. To date, it is still unknown what transforms these two compounds into urolithin A. It should also be noted that this transformation doesn’t happen for everyone.

Does that mean only a select few get to outlive the rest of the human population?
